Deep Roots approach

Hi! I'm so grateful you're here. My hope is that this means you're starting your path to greater mental, emotional, spiritual, physical, and/or relational wellbeing. I am here to help.

I chose the name Deep Roots because being rooted is a profound sense of connection and grounding, like the deep roots of a mighty oak tree anchoring it firmly to the earth. Just as these roots draw nourishment from the soil, a person who is rooted draws strength and stability from their surroundings and experiences. The feeling of being firmly anchored can offer a sense of peace and resilience, enabling one to weather life’s storms with grace. These two pictures are of me standing beside two Oak trees that we planted years ago from two acorns. The first one was not watered or tended to well. The second was well fed and well watered. The evidence in the growth of these trees is a symbol of what happens when we tend to our own personal growth and healing.

Transforming mental healthcare

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado. I completed my Master of Arts degree in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling/Therapy at UNC in May of 2019. I strive to provide a collaborative environment where people are free to be themselves. I primarily work with people from an emotionally focused orientation. Life is fast paced, and I want to provide an atmosphere where clients can “slow-down,” and better understand what is happening for them in their lives. My desire is to help people develop new “pathways” in their lives, and to recover “lost territory.”

Throughout much of my work, I integrate an attachment-based perspective. I strive to develop an empathetic relationship and draw upon my personal experience as a small business owner, working in the trades, serving in faith-based organizations, and participating in professional athletics. I strive to help clients gain insight into their experience and assist in developing skills to help people where they are challenged in their personal lives, as well as their interpersonal relationships. I work with children 3-10, and adults across the lifespan.

I am experienced in working with trauma, anxiety, self-esteem/identity work, emotional abuse, neurodiversity (ADHD), relationship issues, and grief. I am trained and experienced in EMDR, utilizing this modality in my work with children and adults when appropriate. I also offer play therapy for children. I identify as a Christian and have experience providing Christian Counseling in my clinical work. I serve people from all faith backgrounds, and I am able to provide Christian Counseling at the request of the client. When not in the office, I enjoy hiking, cooking, playing games, and spending time with my family. I love music and different expressions of the arts. Recently, I began enjoying a new hobby of aquarium keeping.

“Steve is one of my most valuable referrals. He has a compassionate, non-judgmental approach, creating a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore their feelings and experiences. With extensive training and experience in play therapy, Steve is able to provide services that very few clinicians can provide. Having had the privilege of working with Steve and collaborating on shared cases over the years, I can confidently say that Steve approaches each session with deep empathy and gentle care and strives to always operate on a level of clinical and ethical excellence.”

I am honored to have Mr. Scifres as a counselor for the past few years. He has shown himself to be a caring, highly insightful, and knowledgeable counselor throughout the most challenging times in my life’s journey. When making major life decisions as of recent, his countless insights throughout our discussions helped me become more emboldened to make the right decisions for my life and not self-destructive habits that I have struggled with-in life. His counsel has been honest and fair while pointing me towards a joyful outlook on life overall. I have and will continue to recommend him to everyone due to his high character and ability to help people right where they are at currently.
